3 Fun (Simple) Online Hearing Tests

Not quite ready for a full-fledged hearing test? Why not kill a few minutes and see how you stack up against the internet, by taking a couple quick, extremely rudimentary hearing tests online?

The video “tests” below are all centered around testing high frequency hearing, since for most people, the high frequencies are the first to go when hearing loss sets in.

So plug some headphones in (preferably over the ear) and watch the videos below. The results may surprise you!

For some perspective, the approximate range for human hearing is between 20 to 20,000Hz. However, the majority of speech energy is concentrated between 300Hz and 3000Hz, so if you can’t hear some of those very high frequency tones- don’t sweat it!

It’s interesting to read some of the comments on those YouTube videos. Many are from teens who are surprised that they are not hearing within what is considered normal for their age group. Unfortunately, for those of us in the hearing aid industry, that isn’t a surprise. We are in the midst of a hearing loss epidemic among teens who have cranked up the volume on their music too high.

How I fared: I’m a 29 year old male with normal hearing, and the highest frequency I could hear on each of those tests averaged out to be about 16,000Hz, which puts me at excellent hearing. Phew!
