{"id":11889,"date":"2022-01-09T06:48:06","date_gmt":"2022-01-09T06:48:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ziphearing.com\/blog\/?p=11889"},"modified":"2026-04-03T10:17:02","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T10:17:02","slug":"hearing-health-news-december-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ziphearing.com\/blog\/hearing-health-news-december-21\/","title":{"rendered":"Hearing Health News &#8211; December &#8217;21"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Supply chain issues persist in the hearing aid industry<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/09\/business\/inflation-supply-chains-economy\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">glimmers of hope<\/a> that an end to the supply chain nightmare is in sight, the hearing aid industry is still heavily affected by the semiconductor shortage and other supply chain issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many critical components for the manufacturing of hearing aids and accessories are unavailable or backordered well into \u201822.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve covered this topic in each of our \u201821 blog posts, and until the situation changes for better or worse, we won\u2019t provide continued coverage on this, as it no longer feels newsworthy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is unfortunately the new normal for the foreseeable future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"eargo\"><strong>Eargo announces layoffs of US-based employees<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Direct-to-consumer hearing aid manufacturer Eargo announced that it\u2019s cutting its US-based workforce by up to 30%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ziphearing.com\/blog\/hearing-health-news-september-21\/\">September\u2019s blog<\/a>, the firm is currently at the center of an investigation concerning potential reimbursement fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Eargo, the move is in response to the decrease in orders that came after the investigation was announced by the Department of Justice.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is our hope at ZipHearing that Eargo emerges from these crises and continues to be a large-scale supplier of hearing devices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nearly invisible and rechargeable Eargo hearing device is unique in the industry, and we think Eargo\u2019s innovation (and competition) is a good thing for the industry at large.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gn\"><strong>GN acquires direct-to-consumer retailer Lively<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a busy month in the direct-to-consumer segment of the hearing aid industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As rules for the Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Act begin to take shape, we\u2019re seeing hearing aid manufacturers positioning themselves for this new distribution channel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the latest move, The GN Group, which owns the ReSound and Beltone hearing aid brands (among other audio-related brands), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gn.com\/newsroom\/news\/2021\/december\/gn-hearing-acquires-new-york-based-lively\">announced<\/a> they\u2019ll be acquiring direct-to-consumer retailer Lively Hearing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purchase price was around 95 million USD and gives the GN Group 91% ownership of Lively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s an interesting excerpt from the press release: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-zip-gutenberg-zip-quote-block post-inside-quote\"><i class=\"zip zip-quote-left-solid\"><\/i><p>Today, two-thirds of Lively\u2019s consumer inquiries are looking for either an online experience with access to a clinic or have severe to profound losses requiring in-clinic care. When combining GN Hearing and Lively, a new offering will be developed to meet these consumers\u2019 needs by providing access to GN Hearing\u2019s network of hearing care professionals.<\/p><h4><\/h4><span class=\"designation\"><\/span><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At ZipHearing, we\u2019ve always known the above to be true- that most consumers are best-served by having access to a local hearing care provider.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question now becomes- will purchasers of Lively hearing aids be willing to pay the service fees that hearing providers demand, and if so, will those service fees negate the savings the customer originally realized from buying hearing aids online.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges with this new approach aside, we think this is a positive development for Lively customers and look forward to seeing how ReSound develops this new offering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"nu\"><strong>Nuheara secures supply agreement with Sonova<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On December 6th, Australian hearing technology company Nuheara <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuheara.com\/news\/nuheara-secures-global-supply-agreement-with-sonova\/\">announced<\/a> they\u2019d secured a global supply agreement with Sonova.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Switzerland-based Sonova is a leading global supplier of hearing care solutions, owning multiple hearing aid brands (most notably Phonak), and hundreds of retail hearing aid offices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under this three year agreement, Nuheara will initially supply Nuheara-manufactured and branded products to Sonova and it\u2019s affiliates in the USA and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is Nuheara, and why is this supply agreement significant?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nuheara is a global leader in Hearable products. They develop proprietary, multi-functional, personalised intelligent hearing devices that augment a person\u2019s hearing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image ar-1-1\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;this.classList.add('is-broken');this.closest('figure')?.classList.add('is-broken')\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ziphearing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/max-new.webp?resize=600%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Nuheara case\" class=\"wp-image-12573\" style=\"width:614px;height:614px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ziphearing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/max-new.webp?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ziphearing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/max-new.webp?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ziphearing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/max-new.webp?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ziphearing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/max-new.webp?resize=83%2C83&amp;ssl=1 83w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Nuheara&#8217;s current flagship product, IQbuds2 MAX, offers a suite of hearing enhancement features for a price of $399 for a pair.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In short, they\u2019re not quite hearing aids, but far from your basic amplifier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nuheara\u2019s devices are rechargeable and wireless Bluetooth earbuds with a suite of hearing enhancement features that you wouldn\u2019t see in most amplifiers, such as active noise cancellation, in-home personalization, and directional microphones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re perfect for people who are not quite ready for a hearing aid but need some help.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do Nuheara products compare to the hearing aids that will also be sold by the professional hearing clinics that will now be carrying Nuheara?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The folks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearingtracker.com\/opinion\/nuheara-iq-buds-max-and-hearing-aids-compared\">HearingTracker.com<\/a> did a comparison and here was the takeaway:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-zip-gutenberg-zip-quote-block post-inside-quote\"><i class=\"zip zip-quote-left-solid\"><\/i><p>After testing both products, Andy\u2014who suffers from more-than-mild hearing loss\u2014concludes that the less expensive Nuheara hearables are likely sufficient for those with normal hearing or mild hearing loss, who need \u201csituational\u201d assistance in challenging listening environments. His more expensive Phonak Aud\u00e9o Marvel hearing aids are better for those with moderate-to-severe hearing loss who need all-day assistance.<\/p><h4><\/h4><span class=\"designation\"><\/span><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And therein lies the reason (we assume) for this supply agreement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nuheara benefits from adding 3,000+ points of sale, while Sonova outlets are able to offer a lower priced alternative to hearing aids with the hopes of ultimately upgrading that consumer to a hearing aid manufactured by Sonova.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"med\"><strong>Medicare coverage of hearing aids in doubt<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With Senator Joe Manchin announcing he cannot support the Build Back Better Act, it appears Medicare coverage of hearing aids will not be happening anytime soon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ziphearing.com\/blog\/hearing-health-news-october-21\/\">October\u2019s post<\/a>, part of this act, if passed, would have provided funding for hearing aid coverage for some Medicare recipients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, this coverage would\u2019ve been very limited anyway, affecting only a small percentage of hard of hearing Medicare recipients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course the bill is not completely dead, and if it\u2019s eventually passed, we\u2019ll provide updates as they pertain to hearing aid coverage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Supply chain issues persist in the hearing aid industry Although there are glimmers of hope that an end to the supply chain nightmare is in sight, the hearing aid industry is still heavily affected by the semiconductor shortage and other supply chain issues.
