Released by Oticon on August 25, 2022, Own is Oticon's newest line of custom in-the-ear hearing aids for mild-to-severe hearing losses.

Oticon Own is most well-known for being the world’s first in-the-ear hearing aid to include an on-board Deep Neural Network which has learned to recognize virtually all types of sounds, their details, and how they should ideally sound.

Prior to Own, Oticon hadn’t released an in-the-ear model since 2016, so Own is a much needed update and now means Oticon has a winning product in just about every category.

Speech recognition is great

Hi, my name is Sanford and I'm here in Los Angeles and I am a longtime hearing aid wearer user, and I just wanted to share my experience with you. I've tried most of all the hearing aids on the market. I'm the kind of person who wants to understand speech. That seems to be my biggest problem and I guess it's most everybody's problem is understanding speech and actually hearing a lot better. I've tried, as I said, many hearing aids for the ones behind the ear, the ones in the ear and my goal was to, number one, find one that's very discreet because I'm a little bit you know, where I don't like the wires and showing and, so I kind of focused on the in the ear hearing aids specifically, they call it invisible in canal or IIC, and I searched the internet for information about hearing aids that are a lot smaller and ones that have good speech recognition. I, one of the bigger companies and well known companies is called Oticon and I found a company called Zip Hearing which, actually they were a lot less expensive and than going to my local audiologist. So, I contacted them and they gave me a local audiologist, which I have to say is one of the best audiologists I've met with and I've been to probably, you know, 7 or 8 audiologists over the years and she is the most knowledgeable and you could tell she really cares about her patients. And so in talking to Zip Hearing, I was a little concerned because it is an internet kind of company where you buy something over the internet and, wasn't sure, you know. But after talking with them, I was quite pleased with their, and I felt comfortable with their answers and their ability to help me. And so I ordered these hearing aids through Oticon. And Oticon is a very large manufacturer and they came out with a newer IIC, again invisible in the canal hearing aid and Zip Hearing had a very good, you know, a lot better price than going to my local audiologist here and so I thought, well, I'll give them a try and sure enough, they everything they said came true. The, hearing aid was you know, delivered. I met with their audiologist and as I said earlier, she is a great one of the best audiologists I've ever worked with. And as a matter of fact, this is the hearing aid right here, you can see how small it is. As I said, I'm the kind of person who doesn't like all the stuff around their ears, wires and things. So, I go for the small one. But, because it's so small, it's actually invisible to anybody else, and the main thing I was concerned about or was looking for was speech recognition. Speech recognition is probably the one in all the hearing aids that I've used is the one issue that they all have that you can't, it might turn up the volume, but it doesn't give you that real good speech recognition. And, the Oticon, IIC that I'm wearing now, the speech recognition is great. I've tried it. I've tried, as I say, I've tried many of them, and none of them were as good as this. Even the ones that go behind the ear with the wire, that are supposed to be more powerful or more, has more features. I wasn't concerned about the features in terms of, you know, being able to change the sound on your cell phone and, you know, adjust it. The real key for me was, you know, I was saying, what too often to people and even when I went in a restaurant, you know, you've heard about that before, where restaurant noise is terrible with hearing aids. And in most hearing aids, it is, as I said, the Oticon company and Zip Hearing really set me up on this hearing aid. And I'm very, very happy. And I just wanted to pass that along to those people who are searching around for a hearing aid. Again, one thing is they do cost a little bit more than the average hearing aid, but you'll go through many hearing aids that are cheaper. They won't give you the speech recognition. They're terrible in restaurants and I'm very happy with these and as I said, I saved some money with the Zip Hearing and I was very happy with that. Does this hearing aid allow for hands-free phone calls?

The ITC, ITE HS, and ITE FS models do have hands-free calling but it requires iPhone 11 or newer, running on iOS 15.2 or later. With these models it is an entirely hands-free phone call experience, as the push-button on these models will allow you to answer, reject, and hangup phone calls. If you any any other phone, you can only have hands-free calling via Oticon's ConnectClip accessory. The ConnectClip accessory can be clipped to your shirt or worn on a neckloop, and that has a microphone on it that will pick up your voice for the caller, allowing you to keep the phone in your pocket/purse, etc.

Can this hearing aid be paired directly to my Bluetooth TV?

No. To stream audio from the TV you'll need the TV Adapter 3.0

Is this hearing aid Bluetooth compatible?

The ITC and ITE models are are Made for iPhone, which means they can connect directly with iPhones to stream music, phone calls, and more. Own is also compatible with the new Android protocol, Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA), allowing direct streaming from select Android devices with Android 10 and Bluetooth 5.0. If your phone isn't directly compatible with Own, you can still get Bluetooth functionality via the ConnectClip accessory so long as you have the ITC or ITE models.

How will I know when it's time to change the battery?

A few hours before the battery dies, you'll hear three steady beeps. This will usually happen a few times. Then, right before the battery dies, you'll hear four descending tones.

How long do the batteries last?

Battery life will vary depending on several factors. In general, the 312 battery models will last 3.5-7 days, and the size 10 battery will last 2-4 days.

Are the batteries hard to change?

For most people, no. But if you have poor dexterity, we'd recommend considering one of the larger 312 battery models (ITC OR ITE) and not the size 10 models (IIC OR CIC).

How can I control this hearing aid, and which settings can I control?

You can control the volume and program of this hearing aid using the onboard pushbutton or Remote Control 3.0. If you get the ITC, ITE HS, or ITE FS model, you can also use the Oticon ON app to control background noise reduction and tinnitus relief sounds.

How do I turn this hearing aid on and off?

To turn the hearing aid off, simply open the battery door. When the battery door is closed again, the hearing aid will power on.

Does the app have a “Find My Hearing Aid” feature?

Yes. However, in order to use this feature, you wouldn've had to have setup the app and paired your hearing aids to your phone, prior to losing them. Once the hearing aids have been paired, if you lose them, the app will help you locate them, so long as the hearing aids are powered on. If the hearing aids are powered off, or if their batteries have died, the app will show you the last location of the hearing aids when they were powered on.

Is there any reason not to buy the IIC or CIC model?

Maybe. Like almost all IIC and CIC hearing aids, these models will not have Bluetooth streaming capabilities, cannot be programmed remotely by your hearing care provider, and cannot be adjusted via the Oticon ON app. Due to the small size of these models, Oticon had to make some hardware compromises, and these models only have one microphone. Oticon's MoreSound Intelligence was designed to work with input from two microphones (and it does with all other models except IIC and CIC), and we suspect MoreSound Intelligence is more effective with two microphones. Finally, the IIC model only has a single automatic program, and cannot be adjusted by the user. Some users may feel this doesn't give them enough control or flexibility over their listening experiene in different environments, though this is common for IIC models.

Is this hearing aid CROS compatible?

No. Oticon's newest CROS compatible hearing aid is called Oticon More.

Can I get this hearing aid with a telecoil?

The ITC, ITE HS, and ITE FS can be ordered with a telecoil. However if ordered with a telecoil, the hearing aid will not have Bluetooth connectivity to your phone. With Oticon Own, you have to choose one or the other- Bluetooth or telecoil.

Compatible with wireless Oticon Own models: ITC, ITE HS, ITE FS. Plug it into the back of your TV or soundbar and the audio will be streamed directly to your hearing aids. Others can keep the TV at their preferred volume level, while you set your own volume via the app or on the hearing aids themselves.

ConnectClip, $249

Compatible with wireless Oticon Own models: ITC, ITE HS, ITE FS. ConnectClip has two features. First, it's most commonly used as a Bluetooth streamer that allows you to stream audio from your phone to your hearing aids. If you have an iPhone, you don't need this, because iPhones stream directly to select Oticon Own hearing aids (the ITC and ITE models). If you have an Android or any other phone and you want to stream from your phone, you need this. Even if you have an iPhone, it still may make sense to get this, because it does allow for hands free phone calls. Wear it around your neck and the microphone picks up your voice for the person on the other end of the call to hear, so you don't have to hold you the phone to your mouth when speaking. The second feature of ConnectClip is its ability to work as a remote microphone. If you have a hard time hearing in noise this accessory is a lifesaver. Attach the ConnectClip to a companion's shirt and their voice will stream directly to your hearing aids. Their voice will come through much stronger than all the competing noise in the environment.
