Review by: Steven from WA
Model: Phonak Audéo Lumity 90 R
Bought: Nov 2022

Summary: Steven reviews the Phonak Audéo Lumity 90 rechargeable hearing aids, highlighting their compact size, discretion, and performance. He appreciates the all-day battery life but notes the lack of a portable charging option as a drawback. The hearing aids provide clear calls and allow for streaming of various audio content, with easy control through a mobile app. However, Steven points out some issues, such as occasional Bluetooth connectivity problems and limited equalizer options during streaming, especially for Android users. He appreciates the personalized adjustments possible through collaboration with an audiologist, facilitated by ZipHearing, and contrasts his positive experience with these hearing aids to a less satisfactory one with Rexton hearing aids from Costco, which lacked advanced features. Despite minor inconveniences, Steven highly recommends Phonak Audeo Lumity for those seeking feature-rich hearing aids, while suggesting that simpler models might suffice for users with basic needs.

Review by: Tom from MI
Model: Phonak Audéo Lumity 90 RL Life
Bought: Sep 2022

Summary: Tom, a professional engine builder exposed to loud environments, shares his journey through various hearing aid experiences, culminating in his satisfaction with Phonak Audéo Lumity Life 90 hearing aids. His work around high-performance engines contributed to his substantial hearing loss, making communication challenging, especially in noisy settings. After disappointing experiences with other brands and sales-driven audiologists, Tom emphasizes the contrast with Phonak's Audéo Lumity 90's performance, value, and rechargeability. He appreciates the extended battery life and sealed unit design, which prevents sweat damage, a problem he faced with previous aids. Tom highlights the significant improvement in hearing and communication at work and in social settings, marking the change as almost life-changing. He advises potential hearing aid users to differentiate between audiologists and salespeople, emphasizing the importance of seeking solutions over sales. Tom's positive experience with Phonak reflects in his ability to engage in conversations, enjoy music, and participate in meetings without additional devices. He concludes by recommending this hearing aid for its natural sound quality and user-friendly features, offering a stark contrast to his previous negative experiences with other hearing aid brands.

So much clearer

Was just fitted with the newest Phonak Lumity hearing devices, they are truly amazing! The sound quality is super crystal clear!  Very comfortable and even wearing a sun hat with the brim fitting next to my hearing devices there was not any sound issues. I had been wearing the Phonak Paradise 70’s which would be comparable, but so much clearer sound.

I still struggle to hear

I have come to the conclusion that the hearing improvement that I had hoped for is just marginal in a quiet setting. I still struggle to hear my wife clearly on my left side. The Bluetooth was very good with phone conversations. The best part was in a noisy environment I was better able to hold a conversation with someone. I was hoping the new PRISM processor introduced in the Paradise series would help me with better speech clarity but it hasn’t.

Remarkably comfortable

I have moderate to severe hearing loss at high frequencies. I have found the Phonak Audeo hearing aids to be very helpful in conversations when there is a lot of ambient noise and in discerning speech when listening to tv, my two main areas of concern. They are remarkably comfortable and I was accustomed to them before I got home from the delivery appointment. The sound quality is good. I like that they can stream music or siri via Bluetooth. You can even listen to a football game at a wedding without offending anyone. The phone calling or answering with an ear tap is a big plus. I like being able to adjust and control the Phonaks from my cell phone. I’m glad I opted for the waterproof version because it is so easy to forget you are wearing the aids, on a couple of occasions I have gotten into the shower while wearing them. Fortunately the waterproof Life version tolerated the shower just fine. All in all, I’m very pleased.

Phonak Lumity Life

I tried several different brands before I bought the Phonak Lumity Life aids. Felt they were the best for me. I travel to dry and humid climates and felt the waterproof version was the best choice, had one aid prior that had to be dried out from being in rain. Now hopefully no issues there. They sound is great, picks up from all directions. Only complaint is the bluetooth to phone, hard to hear if in any noise area for the person you are talking to, they just hear the background noise. You hear them, but they hear the other noise. John S.

Highly recommend

I DO enjoy the benefits of wearing hearing aids. I have worn aids for the past nine years and recently replaced them with Phonak L70-RL hearing aids which I purchased through Zip Hearing. I've only worn them for about a week now, but I am very impressed. The quality of the Phonak product greatly exceeds my previous aids; which were from a big name provider. The sound is much clearer and more natural. The aids quickly adapt to the different hearing environments I am in. In addition, the MyPhonak app allows me to tailor my listening experience with my smart phone. I am very pleased with my purchase, and would highly recommend Phonak Life hearing aids.

Much better than I expected

After just 2 weeks of use I can honestly say that I wish I had done this earlier. In an attempt to 'save money' a couple of years ago I did the cheap route of hearing amplifiers which did only that - amplify, so I got what I paid for. These hearing aids are so easy to use, are not easily seen because of their small size, and they do everything I was told they would do.

The best overall sound quality I’ve found

I’ve switched from another top rated brand to these Phonaks and couldn’t be much happier. The sound is about as natural as I’ve found and Phonak has stepped it up in the interconnectivity and app space. They automatically connect to the TV adaptor, I’m no longer using sub-titles! I’m still learning the features of the app, I like being able to change settings on demand, but I have to say, the automatic adjustment works very well. Very happy. :)

Common questions about Phonak Audéo Lumity hearing aids

Bluetooth / ConnectivityRechargeabilityDisposable BatteriesControls/AppsMiscellaneous

Choose questions category:

Can this hearing aid be paired directly to my Bluetooth TV?

Yes, though Phonak doesn't recommend it, as it can cause excessive battery drain. Phonak recommends purchasing the TV Connector accessory for this instead.

Does this hearing aid allow for hands-free phone calls?

Yes. Audéo Lumity hearing aids use the Hands-Free Profile (HFP), a standard Bluetooth profile used for voice calls. This profile allows the hearing aids to act as a wireless headset, transmitting the phone call audio directly to the user's ears while also picking up their voice through the hearing aid's built-in microphones. This feature works best in quiet environments. If you use hands-free calling when you're outdoors or in a noisy environment, the caller on the other end may say you sound like you're on speakerphone.

Is this hearing aid Roger compatible?

Yes. All Audéo Lumity models can pair directly to Roger devices.

Is this hearing aid Bluetooth compatible?

Yes, Phonak Audéo Lumity hearing aids are Bluetooth compatible, and it's one of the features that sets Audéo Lumity hearing aids apart from the competition. Many hearing aids on the market today are primarily designed to connect to Apple devices. However, Audéo Lumity hearing aids use a combination of different Bluetooth technologies which allows them to connect with a wider variety of devices, such as Android phones, computers, and tablets, not just Apple products.

How many hours a day do the batteries last?

With no streaming, your batteries may last up to 20 hrs. With several hours a day of streaming, the your batteries should last between 12-16 hrs.

What is the lifespan of the rechargeable batteries?

Expect your battery to last 3-4 years. The battery is built-in to the hearing aid, so when it needs to be replaced, your hearing care provider will ship the hearing aid to Phonak and they'll do it. Feels will usually apply, ranging from $75-$200. If your battery dies within your 3 year warranty period, Phonak will replace it at no cost.

How will I know when my battery needs to be charged?
The hearing aids will make two long beep sounds. Your hearing care provider can show you a demo of these sounds in Phonak's fitting software, so you know what to expect. Typically the aids will make these notification sounds every 15-30 minutes, until the aid quits working entirely.
What if I'm on-the-go and my battery dies?

This is a risk with all rechargeable hearing aids, but most are reliable enough that with proper planning and charging, this should rarely happen. At this time, the majority of Audéo Lumity models are not compatible with a mobile charger, so they can't be charged on-the-go. If you are concerned about this, you may want to purchase the Audéo RL Life model (the waterproof model), as that model comes with the Phonak Charger Case Go, which is a mobile charger that allows you to charge your hearing aids without the charger being plugged into an outlet.

How long does it take to get a full charge?

Your hearing aids will fully charge in 3 hrs, giving you 13-20 hours of power. A 30 minute quick charger will get you 6 hours of power .

Does the charger include a dehumidifier?
It does not. If you live in a humid environment or are concerned about moisture and are using one of the non-LIFE models, we recommend buying Phonak's D-Dry+ accessory.
Why does the app show the battery depleting faster on one aid?
This is completely normal. One of your hearing aids (right or left), will probably always drain a little bit faster than the other, on a consistent basis. This has to do with the way the hearing aids pair to the phone via Bluetooth- it always causes the battery on one aid to drain faster than the other.
How will I know when it's time to change the battery?
Your Audéo Lumity hearing aids will make two long beep sounds when it's time to change the battery. Your hearing provider can demonstrate how these sounds will sound so you'll know what to expect.
How long do the batteries last?
Your size 312 batteries will need to be changed every 3-6 days, depending on how much Bluetooth streaming you do.
Are the batteries hard to change?
For most people, no. If you're concerned about changing batteries, we recommend getting one of the rechargeable models.
How can I control this hearing aid, and which settings can I control?
You can control the volume and program with the onboard rockerswitch, the RemoteControl, or the myPhonak app. The myPhonak app will also allow you to adjust the frequencies of the hearing aids.
Does the app have a “Find My Hearing Aid” feature?

Phonak hearing aids and Phonak apps do not have a "Find My Hearing Aid" feature.

How do I turn this hearing aid on and off?

Press and hold the onboard rockerswitch's bottom button down for 3 seconds to turn it on or off. When you place the hearing aid in the charger it will automatically turn off. If you have the Audéo L 312 model that uses disposable batteries, opening the battery door will power down the device.

Phonak Audéo Paradise vs Phonak Audéo Lumity

In comparing Phonak Audéo Lumity vs. Phonak Audéo Paradise, the biggest improvement to Audéo Lumity is the updated operating system, AutoSense OS 5.0. The operating system can be thought of as the brain of the hearing aid. One of the most important things a hearing aid's operating system can do is help identify the sound environment that the wearer is in, so the hearing aid can make the correct adjustments. The biggest benefit of AutoSense OS 5.0 is for the first time ever, it's been trained with artificial intelligence based machine learning to accurately identify a sound environment, so it can automatically adjust the hearing aid as accurately as possible. This means less fumbling with your hearing aid controls, or the app, to try and adjust your hearing aids correctly. The hearing aids just get it right. AutoSense OS 5.0 controls a suite of new featurees from Phonak, collectively called SmartSpeech Technology, and each of these features are proven to provide improved speech understanding or reduced listening effort. Audéo Lumity is also one of the first hearing aids from phonak that offers a personalized hearing experience and health data tracking with the myPhonak app. Inside the health section of the app, numerous functions are available such as steps and wearing time, including optional goal setting, activity levels, heart rate tracking, and distance walked and ran. Those new features are nice, but in a nutshell, Audéo Lumity is all about improved speech understanding via AutoSense OS 5.0. This release isn't one of Phonak's flashiest releases over the last decade, but it's the kind of release that addresses and gets to the heart of why people buy hearing aids in the first place- to hear better.

Is this hearing aid CROS compatible?

As of August 2023, the Audéo LR, and  Audéo RT models are CROS compatible. The Audéo Life (waterproof), Audéo Slim, and Audéo Fit models are not CROS compatible.

Does Audéo Lumity have a telecoil?

The Audéo L RT model has a telecoil.

What colors is Phonak Slim available in?
Phonak Audéo Slim does not come in the standard (11) colors as shown at the top of this page. Slim is available in 4 different two-toned colors and they can be seen on Phonak's website.
What makes Audéo Fit different than other Audéo Lumity models?
As of August 2023, Audéo Fit is the newest model in the Audéo Lumity family of hearing aids. What sets this hearing aid apart from other Audéo Lumity models is its ability to track health data— heart rate, steps and distance walked, calories burned, and daily wear time. It's able to do this thanks to special sensors that are on the receivers of Audéo Fit hearing aids. Audéo Fit does have limitations compared to other Audéo Lumity models. First, it's only available in the sand beige, chestnut, and silver grey colors. But more importantly, it's only compatible with certain receiver, dome, and mold styles that Phonak makes. This means that depending on the severity of your hearing loss, Audéo Fit may not be appropriate for you. Discuss this with your hearing care provider or ZipHearing team member.

RemoteControl, $249

RemoteControl, $249

You probably don't need this. Most people use the app to control their hearing aids, and if not the app, then the push button on the hearing aid itself. But if neither of those suit you, this remote is a simple way to control the volume and program.

The image of Roger On iN V2 hearing aids
Roger On iN V2, $1649

Roger On iN V2, $1649

Roger On has 4 modes- Pointing mode, Presenter mode, Headset mode, and Table Mic mode. In Pointing mode, simply point it towards the subject you want to hear and it'll pick up their voice, just like a microphone would. In Presenter mode (AKA lapel mode), it'll focus almost entirely on the wearer's voice and stream that to your hearing aids. In Table Mic mode is where this accessory shines, and what gives it the advantage over Roger Pen iN. When Roger On is laid flat on a surface (like a table), it automatically figures out it's orientation and switches into an automatic directionality mode. In this mode, it can automatically shift the focus of the microphones towards the direction of speech. Roger On can also wirelessly stream audio from the TV to your hearing aids, so if you buy it, you don't need to buy the TV Connector. Finally, in headset mode, you can plug Roger On iN into your computer via an included USB cable, allowing you to hear participants in online calls (like Zoom), and you can talk into the Roger microphone so the participants can hear you.
RATING7
The image of Roger Select iN hearing aids
Roger Select iN, $1349

Roger Select iN, $1349

Ideal for stationary situations where background noise is present, like a table at a restaurant. Set the Select iN in the middle of the table, and it automatically selects the person who is talking and seamlessly switches from one talker to another, streaming the sound directly to your hearing aids. What's nice about the Roger Select (and the reason it's better for smaller group conversations where it can be placed within arms reach), is you can hit a button on the device to change the direction the microphone is facing – you can “select” it – and override the automatic selection, allowing you to focus on the speaker most important to you. Select iN can also be worn by someone else you want to hear, on their chest using a clip or lanyard. This is known as “lapel mode.” When in lapel mode, Select iN knows its orientation and automatically ensures the microphone points upward to pick up the voice of the speaker. The lapel mode is good for a presenter at a meeting, a fitness class, and a passenger or driver in a car. Roger Select iN can also wirelessly stream audio from the TV to your hearing aids, so if you buy a Select iN, you don't need to buy the TV Connector.
RATING8
The image of Roger Table Mic II iN hearing aids
Roger Table Mic II iN, $1888

Roger Table Mic II iN, $1888

Of all the Roger accessories, Table Mic II iN has the least versatile functionality- it's really only designed for stationary use. Ideal for working adults who participate in various meetings with multiple (4+) people involved. When placed in the middle of a table, it's able to automatically pick up the voice of the person who is talking and stream it directly to your hearing aids. Table Mic II iN automatically switches between speakers, and unlike Select, you can't manually override the choices Table Mic II iN makes. Multiple Roger Table microphones can be connected to create a network and with a range of more than 60 feet it ensures you're able to fully understand everyone at work.

PartnerMic, $449

If you have a hard time hearing in noise this accessory is a lifesaver. Attach this microphone to a companion's shirt and their voice will stream directly to your hearing aids. Their voice will come through much stronger than all the competing noise in the environment.

D-Dry+, $179

D-Dry+, $179

If you live in a humid environment, sweat a lot, are prone to ear infections, or are getting custom in-the-ear hearing aids, you should get this. It plugs into a standard outlet and uses UV-C light to kill germs, and blows warm air to remove moisture. We don't think this accessory is necessary for most people, especially those buying the Audéo Life Waterproof model.

KEY FEATURES

1. Dome

The image of Dome hearing aids feature

The dome slips over and encloses/protects the receiver/speaker. Domes are made with medical-grade silicone. They come in different shapes and sizes—your hearing care professional will help you pick the right size and style. Selecting the appropriate dome will change the sound performance of your hearing aids, so if you’re not achieving satisfying results with your hearing aids, your hearing provider will often consider trying a different dome style. In some cases, such as for wearers with severe or profound hearing loss, an earmold will be used instead of a dome.

2. Indicator light

The image of Indicator light hearing aids feature

The LED indicator light shows the charging state of the battery. 3 red blinks means the aids are 10% charged, 3 orange blinks 11-80%, 3 green blinks 81-99%, and a solid green light means the aids are fully charged.

3. Microphone

The image of Microphone hearing aids feature

The microphone picks up the sound from the environment and sends it into the hearing aid for processing. You’ll mostly want to leave the microphone alone, but periodically check it to ensure it’s not being plugged up by hair care products or oils.

4. Receiver

The image of Receiver hearing aids feature

The receiver AKA speaker delivers the sound into the ear. Phonak receivers are available in 3 different strengths, standard (xS), moderate (M), power (xP). Your ZipHearing provider will help you determine the appropriate gain (strength/power) receiver based on the results of your hearing test. Expect to have to replace your receivers every year or so, and this is something that usually takes just a few minutes with your local ZipHearing provider.

5. Receiver wire

The image of Receiver wire hearing aids feature

This thin, plastic-coated wire transmits power and signals to the receiver/speaker, which is worn inside the ear. Phonak receivers are available in 4 different lengths: 0,1,2, & 3. Your ZipHearing provider will help you determine the appropriate length of receiver wire, by measuring your ear. In cases when your ZipHearing provider is unsure of the exact receiver length that will work best for you, we’re happy to send out a few different receiver lengths for you to try.

6. Rechargeable or disposable batteries

The image of Rechargeable or disposable batteries hearing aids feature

The model shown is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, expected to last 16-24 hours/day. The battery takes about 3 hours to fully charge, and a 30 minute quick charge will get you about 6 hours of power. Most people do buy the rechargeable model, and simply put the aids in a charger next to their bed at night, allowing them to wake up with fully charged hearing aids. There is another model (shown on this page below), which uses a size 312 disposable battery. 312 batteries batteries will last anywhere from 3-6 days, depending on how much Bluetooth streaming you do. Your purchase from ZipHearing includes a 1 year supply of disposable batteries.

7. Push button

The image of Push button hearing aids feature

The push button can be programmed by your hearing provider to have different functions, depending on your needs. Some of these functions include volume and program control, on/off functionality, flight mode, answering/ending phone calls, pausing/resuming streaming, and accessing virtual assistants like Siri. Some people use these buttons exclusively to control the hearing aids, and others use the app to control the hearing aids. Others (most people), use a combination of both the app and push button to make adjustments to their hearing aids. You likely won’t have to use these buttons often, but some people find them handy to make quick adjustments to their hearing aids when they change listening environments (ie, entering a noisy restaurant, or a quiet room). Your hearing provider will go over the options available and make sure your hearing aids are set up to your ideal preferences.

8. Water resistant

The image of Water resistant hearing aids feature

Audéo Lumity has an IP68 rating, meaning it’s protected from dust getting inside and can withstand exposure to water. The Audéo Lumity Life model has extra waterproofing protection, but we’d still recommend exercising caution around water, as the receiver AKA speaker does not have the same IP68 rating as the hearing aid and could (potentially) be damaged by water exposure.

9. Wax filter

The image of Wax filter hearing aids feature

When it comes to maintaining your hearing aids, this is where you’ll spend most of your time. The wax filter (mostly) prevents wax and oils from getting into the receiver/speaker. Your hearing provider may supply you with Phonak Cerushield filters enabling you to periodically change these on your own. Some people never have to change these wax filters, others have to change them weekly. Your purchase includes 1 pack of wax filters, and you can purchase additional wax filters directly from your ZipHearing provider, or through a number of sites online such as Amazon.

10. Dome
